POSITION OVERVIEW

SSHS/HOC has been awarded an 18-month State Opioid Response (SOR) grant. The Recovery Coach will work within this 18-month grant program timeframe to assist opioid substance use disorder (SUD) treatment clients with various recovery resources while they are actively engaged in our Substance Use Disorder Treatment; Day by Day outpatient program for opioids. This position is responsible for working directly with these individuals to encourage, support, advocate, motivate and convince them to understand, express, engage in and apply best practice recovery principles and strategies while in treatment and as they return to the community upon completion of the program.

Additionally, this individual works with the SSHS/HOC counseling team and other departments to monitor and track client progress. Other responsibilities may include representing SSHS/HOC at meetings, answering phone inquiries for assistance, working closely with volunteers, as well as some building maintenance and housekeeping duties and administrative work as necessary.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Assess, build and maintain a caseload of approximately 20 appropriate individuals for the SOR program based on predetermined criteria-including vulnerability assessments and SUD treatment status.
  • Participate in required trainings in Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) amongst others.
  • Conduct activities in shelters to engage shelter guests such as card games and bingo while engaging guests to receive an SUD assessment.
  • Maintain participant files in Client Track/Procentive systems and develop reports as required.
  • Ensure program outputs and outcomes are achieved in accordance with appropriate funding sources.
  • Provide education and information to shelter guests and our unsheltered, homeless community on treatment and other Harm Reduction principles and strategies.
  • Skilled in the process of identifying and assessing a wide range of client needs.
  • Knowledge about local community resources and how to use those resources for the benefit of the client.
  • Schedule and coordinate SUD assessments ensuring attendance.
  • Work along LADCs to encourage ongoing treatment attendance and compliance.
  • Work as part of a team including attending regular staff meetings.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in all interactions (verbal, written, phone, technological).
  • Ability to work with private information in a confidential manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience that gives applicants the required skills, abilities, and perspectives listed above are commonly gained through one or more of the following:

  • Personal experience with homelessness;
  • Experience working, interning, or volunteering with people experiencing homelessness;
  • An Associates, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in a relevant field such as Social Work (with accompanying licensure), Human Services, or Family Studies.

This position requires use of your own personal vehicle for Agency business and will be required to maintain liability insurance coverage of at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence.

In addition, applicants must:

  • See themselves as a change agent, have a collaborative nature, and bring a positive attitude to work each shift.
  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of experience in a related field such as homelessness/housing, corrections, chemical or mental health care.
  • Comfortable working in high energy settings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, positively and professionally with participants, providers, family members, and others while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Must have strong personal and professional boundaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to de-escalate volatile situations and a customer-oriented approach in all situations.
  • Broad knowledge of SUDs and recovery dynamics including, American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) six dimensions, SUD assessments and placement, theories of addiction, Stages of Change, co-occurring disorders, the continuum of substance use, the continuum of care, Harm Reduction principles, relapse prevention strategies.
  • Proficiency in prioritizing and multi-tasking while maintaining accuracy, organization and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable using a computer, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Valid MN Driver's License and reliable transportation with the ability to transport clients when necessary.
  • Must pass background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Spanish or Somali proficiency.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Light work - Mostly standing with some sitting. Occasionally exerting up to 20 pounds of force.
